How a Pharma Distributor Achieved Zero Label Failures Across 500K Cold-Chain Units
Custom PET film labels with freeze-grade adhesive maintained 99.8% barcode scan rates after 50 freeze-thaw cycles — from -30°C to +25°C.
The Challenge
A pharmaceutical distributor needed tamper-evident, waterproof labels for cold-chain logistics operating between -30°C and +25°C. The labels had to maintain barcode scanability throughout the supply chain, meet FDA 21 CFR Part 211 compliance requirements, and withstand repeated condensation cycles during temperature transitions. Their existing paper-based labels were failing at a 12% rate during cold-chain transit, causing shipment delays and compliance documentation gaps.
Our Solution
We developed a custom label solution using polyester (PET) film with freeze-grade permanent adhesive specifically formulated for cold-chain applications. Each label was laminated with a matte overcoat to eliminate glare-related scanning failures. The tamper-evident design incorporated a void pattern that activates upon removal, providing visual evidence of tampering. Before production, we conducted extensive material testing: 50 freeze-thaw cycles, condensation exposure, and chemical resistance testing in our materials lab. Variable data printing with unique serialization codes ensured full traceability.
The Results
Zero label failures across 500,000 units shipped through the cold-chain distribution network. Barcode scan success rate measured at 99.8% post freeze-thaw exposure, exceeding the client's 99% threshold. The tamper-evident void pattern performed flawlessly in field audits, and full serialization traceability was maintained throughout the supply chain. The client has since standardized on this label specification for all cold-chain product lines.
